The Slaves were brought to Cape Town by shortly after the Dutch landed in 1652.The were from Sumatra,Java and Borneo. The survivors of the sea journey were sold, could not speak their language, have a religion(not much Malay language survived)The indentured Indian labourers came to SA in 1860-200 years after the Malay slaves came.Check Cape Malays in Wikipedia.(I’m a Cape Malay)

Does not sound like he dropped his “r”s.. Unless by dropping you mean enhancing it.. I hear a lot of T’s too.. hehe

I’ve seen a lot of Afrikaans-speaking people who sound like that. They drop the “r” when they talk. It’s common among Dutch or German speakers, and the Afrikaans language originated in Holland.

True, they were a level above slavery, not quite the same thing! They were mostly from java, malaysia and the other dutch former colonies, some of the comments by this local guide is inaccurate
